REGENCY-SUPERIOR OFFICIAL AUCTIONEER
APS STAMPSHOW 2007

St. Louis, Missouri For the seventh year in a row, Regency-Superior is an official auctioneer for the APS StampShow, the annual convention of the national society for philatelists. The stamp show will be held August 9th-12th at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. Over 3,100 lots will be offered over a three-day session featuring USA, British and Worldwide singles & sets, postal history, and collections.

Session I will be held Friday, August 10th at 6pm (PT) as the show closes, and will feature 1,600 lots of better USA singles and sets. This USA singles session with over $1 million in estimates, begins with 40 Graded Stamps, and includes nearly 200 investment grade mint, never-hinged stamps that will be offered at NO RESERVE.

One of the highlights in Session I is a Scott #108 graded 90 SMQ value at $12,600 (Lot #3 shown at left). This scarce stamp is an 1875 re-issue of the 15˘ black issued in 1861 featuring a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. There were only 397 sold. This amazingly sharp and fresh copy is well centered and has maintained its deep luxuriant color.

Another gem featured in Session I is the offering of a Scott #293, the 1898 Trans-Mississippi $2 orange brown stamp (Lot #664 shown at right). This item catalogs for $6,500, but due to its deep rich color and exceptional centering, the auctioneer estimates this stamp to sell for $10,000.

Session II begins on Saturday, August 11th at 10am (PT), and continues with USA revenue stamps, errors, freaks & oddities, and proofs. Also offered in Session II will be over 500 lots of British and Worldwide singles including modern British perforation varieties and errors, New Zealand OPSOs, Poland ‘Groszy’ overprints, stamps from Tibet, Yemen, and many more. Some of the highlights in Session are the beautifully handstamped Philippine issues.

There is a Philippine Scott #466, a 1944 ‘Victory’ handstamp on a 6c brown stamp (Lot #1583 shown above). There were only 64 of these scarce handstamped issues, and they are seldom offered at auction. Regency-Superior estimates this stamp to bring $2,500.

Session III starts at 10am (PT) on Sunday, August 12th with hundreds of covers and collections. Foreign covers include Canadian Contingents, New Zealand fiscals on documents, many Germany & related areas, and over 50 Zeppelin flight covers from destinations such as Finland, Greece, Guatemala, Russia and USA.

Regency-Superior is proud to offer over 70 colorful and scarce Dorothy Knapp handpainted Patriotic and First Day covers. Dorothy Knapp, known as one of the pioneers of handpainted covers, was born in 1907, and died in 1986. She is by far the most celebrated and recognized of all the handpainted artists. The earliest of these was created in 1941, and range in quantities from only 10 to 25 per stamp issue. They are in much demand today, and have a multiplier of up to 400 times in Scott’s First Day Cover catalog – the highest of all cachet makers. (See Lots 2198 through 2271.)

Viewing for the auction will be held at Regency-Superior’s St. Louis gallery through July 31st, and will then be available at the APS StampShow during show hours, August 9-12th.
