(Auction #113) Dec 5-6, 2015 CELEBRITY SLEUTH
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on:
RARE B&W 8"x10" classic glossy image of Sophia Loren giving a disdainful 'side eye' to Jayne Mansfield's dangerous decolletage. Upon arriving in Hollywood for the first time, Sophia told reporters: 'Everything you see, I owe to pasta.' Giving her measurements as '38-24-38,' the Italian incredulously asked: 'Is it true that Mansfield has two inches on me?! If so, what brand of spaghetti does she use?' Given a lavish welcome dinner April 12, 1957, at ritzy Romanoff's restaurant on Rodeo Drive, Sophia soon found herself overshadowed (literally!) by Mansfield's mammaries: 'She came right for my table,' Loren recalled last year. 'She knew everyone was watching. Listen, look at the picture. Where are my eyes? I'm staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. I'm so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow - BOOM! - and spill all over the table.' Infuriated Italians refused to run the photos and 'the exposure was so great,' her 'left breast cascading out of its sheath,' that 'no decent U.S. magazine found the conscience to print the pictures!' Huffed a miffed Mansfield: 'Maybe she can't afford to wear dresses like this. You know if you wave a flag, it has to have something to hold it up.' Concludes Sophia: 'Many, many times I am given this photo to autograph it. And I never do.' EXCEPT this once! Bold signature of Loren in brown ink.
